A recent study from the US done by Lindsay Shea at Drexel University in PLOS highlights a concerning trend: #autistic individuals enrolled in Medicaid face limited access to necessary federal housing benefits. For the 80% of #autistic individuals with Medicaid as their primary insurance, this disparity creates barriers to essential services, impacting their overall health and quality of life.

The study reveals that the number of autistic individuals enrolled in #Medicaid and receiving #housing support from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) increased by 70% between 2008 and 2016, rising from nearly 53,000 to over 88,000 with 65% of these individuals residing in extremely low-income households.

The study also found that HUD-assisted autistic individuals were more likely to be #Black/#AfricanAmerican and less likely to have #privateinsurance compared to those not receiving HUD assistance. Approximately 3% of autistic individuals were homeless at the time of enrolling in HUD assistance.

The researchers emphasize the importance of affordable and stable housing in improving health outcomes for #autistic individuals and highlight the need for integrated data on public housing and health to better understand and address their needs.

A Global Voice for Autism, we believe that equitable access to healthcare is a fundamental right. These findings underscore the urgent need for systemic reforms not only in the  western world but globally to ensure every #autistic individual can access the care and support they deserve.

✅ How can we drive change?

#Advocate for policies that expand coverage for specialized care.

#Collaborate with policymakers to address service gaps.

Raise #awareness about the unique challenges faced by the autism community.

Together, we can work towards a future where no one is left behind due to systemic barriers.
